People We Meet on Vacation: When the Destination is a Person, Not a Place

People we meet on vacation (ENG)

Posted on janeiro 18, 2026fevereiro 20, 2026 by rodrigirao15

People we meet on vacation tells the story of Poppy and Alex, two friends who meet on their way to college despite being polar opposites. Poppy is an extroverted digital nomad and travel journalist. Alex is an introverted teacher who loves the security of books and routine.

After their first trip together to Canada, they decide to create a tradition: inseparable summer vacations. Once a year, somewhere on the planet, they would spend their holidays together. This continues through Canada, Nepal, and New Orleans, until a summer in Italy leads to a falling out and two years of silence. However, fate forces a reunion: Alex’s brother’s wedding in Barcelona.

A Visual Map of Friendship (and Love)

People we meet on vacation uses travel to show their phases, and the costumes match each destination’s “vibe”:

  • Canada Camping (Roots): Rustic beginnings. Hiking gear and plaid—a practical look for two people just enjoying each other’s company.
  • New Orleans (Fantasy): They pretend to be married, and the aesthetic takes on a Latin, indie vibe. Clothes reflect a desire they aren’t ready to admit yet.
  • Norway (Care and Vulnerability): Poppy gets sick, the trip is canceled, and the look shifts to intimacy. Pajamas and hoodies in her NYC apartment, with Alex in dark tones, focused on taking care of her.
  • Italian Summer (The Highs and Lows): Earthy tones and sophistication. A villa with wine and cheese showcasing a sunny, romantic tension.
  • Barcelona (The Reunion): Spanish heat and wedding elegance. Formal wear contrasting with their internal emotional mess.

“Vacation Alex” vs. Real Life

Poppy says a striking line: “I’m glad grad school Alex didn’t kill vacation Alex.” His agreement shows a clear duality; he takes more risks when he’s with her, but it starts to take a toll. While Poppy had several boyfriends over the years, the way they look at each other reveals an unvoiced depth. In Italy, Alex points out: “Traveling the world is great, but there’s nothing like having a home and a safe harbor.”

The “Blank Page” Syndrome

After the fight, Poppy hits a creative block. Traveling loses its spark without Alex to share it. Her “dream job” becomes an escape from reality. Her trip to Barcelona wasn’t just for the wedding; she needed to know if Alex missed her too. In the end, she realizes that home isn’t a place—it’s the person standing next to you.
